Ian Gathu’s story is one of growth, healing, and giving back to the community. Through his work at the Health and Human Resource Education Center (HHREC), he proudly serves individuals and families throughout Alameda County, including Oakland, San Leandro, and surrounding communities.

Ian began working with HHREC in December 2023 as a Peer Navigator supporting Transitioning Age Youth (TAY). He worked closely with young people by helping connect them to resources, build confidence, and prepare for employment opportunities. In July 2024, he stepped into his current role as the Community-Based Learning (CBL) Coordinator, where he helps lead behavioral health trainings and continues supporting community members directly. Along the way, HHREC also supported his professional growth by helping him earn certifications as a Domestic Violence Counselor, Substance Use Disorder Registered Counselor (SUDRC), Holistic Nutritionist, and Personal Trainer.

Ian’s passion for helping others comes from his own lived experience. He openly shares that he faced mental health and substance use challenges during difficult periods in his life. At one point, he struggled with stress, emotional balance, and finding direction. Those experiences affected not only his mental health, but also his relationships and overall well-being.

Over time, Ian made the decision to create a healthier path for himself. Committing to sobriety became a turning point in his life. Fitness and the gym gave him structure, discipline, and a positive way to manage stress while rebuilding his confidence. He also surrounded himself with supportive people and focused on work that gave him purpose and allowed him to help others facing similar struggles.

Today, Ian is proud to celebrate four years of sobriety. His journey has helped shape the person he is today, someone who leads with empathy, understanding, and hope. What makes his story meaningful is not only the challenges he overcame, but the way he now uses those experiences to support and encourage others in his community every day.
