Drs. Chris and NNeka Harrison are Oakland natives, educators, researchers, and community leaders who have dedicated their work to supporting healing, leadership, and human-centered care in Alameda County. Through higher education, nonprofit leadership, and community based work, they have focused on helping future professionals serve others with empathy, self-awareness, and purpose. Their work is rooted in the belief that “the best work we will ever do is on ourselves,” a message that continues to shape how they teach, mentor, and lead.

Their journey was shaped by several painful life experiences that deeply impacted their mental and emotional well-being. While Dr. Chris Harrison was completing his doctoral program, he unexpectedly lost his mother. During that difficult time, he was also released from his teaching position shortly after taking time off to plan her funeral. A year later, the couple faced another major challenge when serious complications during labor put both Dr. NNeka and their daughter at risk. These moments brought grief, fear, financial stress, and uncertainty, while they were still trying to balance family, work, and professional responsibilities.

What helped them move through those struggles was their faith, support from loved ones, and a commitment to self-reflection and healing. They learned the importance of slowing down, processing emotions, and creating space for their own well being while continuing to care for others. They also realized the value of building stability for their family through entrepreneurship and multiple income sources rooted in their values and skills. Most importantly, they discovered that personal wellness and professional effectiveness go hand in hand.

Today, their experiences continue to guide the work they do with students, professionals, and communities. They teach others that leadership starts with caring for yourself first, because people cannot continue pouring into others when they are emotionally exhausted. Their story is one of resilience, growth, and purpose, showing how personal healing can create lasting impact for individuals, families, and entire communities.
